Professor Don Nutbeam

Don Nutbeam is a member of the US Studies Centre's Council of Advisors. Nutbeam is Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney and a Senior Advisor at the Sax Institute, an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to knowledge transfer for better public policy. Prior to returning to Sydney in 2016, he was Vice-Chancellor of the Univeristy of Southampton in the UK for six years. Nutbeam is a world-renowned expert on public health. Over his thirty-year research career, he has made a substantial international impact on the theory, science and practice of health promotion. He is a highly cited author, with over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and two popular public health textbooks.
Biography

Don Nutbeam is a member of the US Studies Centre's Council of Advisors. Nutbeam is Professor of Public Health at the University of Sydney and a Senior Advisor at the Sax Institute, an independent, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to knowledge transfer for better public policy. Prior to returning to Sydney in 2016, he was Vice-Chancellor of the Univeristy of Southampton in the UK for six years. Before his move to Southampton in 2010, he was Academic Provost at the University of Sydney.

Nutbeam is a world-renowned expert on public health. Over his thirty-year research career, he has made a substantial international impact on the theory, science and practice of health promotion. He is a highly cited author, with over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and two popular public health textbooks.

Nutbeam has held leadership positions in universities, government and health services alike. He has contributed substantially to national and international health policy as a public servant and through international advisory roles. As Head of Public Health at the UK Department of Health (2000–2003), he was the driving force behind a cross-government programme to tackle health inequality in the UK. He has worked as an advisor and consultant for the World Health Organization for over 20 years and also as a consultant and team leader in projects for the World Bank.
