Professor Don Nutbeam

Don Nutbeam is a member of the US Studies Centre Council of Advisors.
Don is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton. He is a world-renowned expert on public health, and over his thirty-year research career has made a substantial international impact on the theory, science and practice of health promotion. He has held leadership positions in universities, government and health services. Before moving back to Southampton, he was Academic Provost at the University of Sydney.
Professor Nutbeam's main research interests are public health intervention, health literacy and adolescent health behaviour. As Vice-Chancellor, he remains actively involved with public health research, continuing work with colleagues internationally on health literacy, and the social, economic and environmental determinants of ageing.
A Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, Professor Nutbeam is a highly cited author, with over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and two popular public health text books.
Professor Nutbeam has contributed substantially to national and international health policy as a public servant and through international advisory roles. As the Head of Public Health at the UK Department of Health (2000–2003), he was the driving force behind a cross-government programme to tackle health inequality in the UK. He has worked as an advisor and consultant for the World Health Organization over 20 years and also as consultant and team leader in projects for the World Bank.
