USSC Non-Resident Senior Fellow Bruce Wolpe spoke to ABC's Afternoon Briefing on Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese securing a one-on-one meeting with US President Donald Trump to discuss why the country should be exempt from sweeping 25 per cent US tariffs on steel and aluminium.

"I think there was a lot of impressive work done on this Superbowl Sunday in the United States..." Wolpe said.

Within hours of Trump's announcement—en route to the Superbowl—that he was going to impose these 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminium, Wolpe highlighted that, "it's a really big deal that a secure meeting time for the prime minister, with the president, would be done."

"And that's the level that it has to be dealt with — this is going to be leader to leader.

"I think based on what happened in the first Trump term that there are promising prospects that this can be resolved without penalty to Australia."
