Following the success of the Alliance 21 conference in Washington DC in January 2014, current and former heads of government, business and academia convened in Canberra to consider our shared interests and the future of the alliance in an emerging Asia.
The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Hon. Julie Bishop MP provided keynote addresses on foreign affairs and security challenges, and the Australian Minister for Trade, the Hon. Andrew Robb MP led the discussion on trade and development.
The Australian Ministers were joined at the invitation-only conference by other senior government, business, and military leaders from Australia and the United States who debated future policy directions for the alliance in an emerging Asia in relation to politics and security, trade and investment, resources and energy and advanced manufacturing.
Following the conference, the United States Studies Centre hosted a gala dinner in honour of the Governor General His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd).
The Hon. Dr Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial provided a welcome and comment, and keynote remarks were made by Senator the Hon. David Johnston, Australian Minister for Defence.
The United States Studies Centre was pleased to once again bring together leading Australians and Americans to share insights into the future of this dynamic part of the world as part of the Alliance 21 project’s examination of the contemporary Australia-US relationship.
