The Australian's Andrew Tillett writes on comments made by US Deputy Secretary of State, Kurt Campbell, and Australian Ambassador the the United States, Kevin Rudd, at the USSC's recent Sydney International Strategy Forum.
“[The Chinese] want to build bases. They want to extend their power there. We’re going to have to do more, and we have to do more with Australia and New Zealand,” Dr Campbell said.
Making his first comments since the re-election of Donald Trump, Dr Rudd highlighted that “American leadership remains indispensable,” and the embassy has been “working hard through the course of the last year to ensure that we were well-prepared for this moment.
“And the bottom line is, we’re ready."
