USSC Associate Professor Dr David Smith talked to 2SER about how Kamala Harris has energised the Democratic Party.
"It's now like a whole new race with only 100 days to go. This has been very refreshing for the Democratic Party," said Dr Smith.
"You can't underestimate how demoralised Democrats were ... because it looked like Biden was almost certainly going to lose.
"To suddenly have somebody new, who in many ways reminds people of Barack Obama in terms of the freshness that she brings, in terms of the fact that she represents people of colour in the Democratic party ... the prospect of potentially having the first woman president - all of this stuff suddenly made her very exciting in ways that she hadn't been when she was vice president."
