USSC Senior Fellow Stephen Loosley tells Sky News that some will see a visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as a reason to escalate the hostility towards the United States and its allies in the region.
"It is very clear that the Biden administration did not want the visit to occur now and maybe later in the year after the Chinese Communist Party's Congress and the the Congressional midterms in the United States, but the Speaker was determined. She's a formidable individual with a tonne of courage."
"A visit by such a senior American official would be interpreted in some quarters as a defacto endorsement of Taiwan's indepdendence. But President Biden has made it clear in his conversation with President Xi that America's (one-China) policy has not changed."
