USSC CEO Dr Michael Green talked to NHK WORLD-JAPAN's Deeper Look program about the history of US-China ties and why competition has increased in the relationship.

"Personally I think you ... have to put some focus on Xi Jinping," said Dr Green.

"When I was working for President [George W.] Bush, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao were the leaders of China. They were trying to avoid confrontation with the US. Xi Jinping appears to relish confrontation with the US, ideologically, economically and militarily. So I think Xi himself is a big historical factor."
