Garrett addresses Beijing Forum on post-GFC China-US relations

US Studies Centre CEO Geoffrey Garrett addressed the sixth Beijing Forum that was held in the Chinese capital 6-8 November 2009. The Forum, a collaboration between Peking University and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies, brought together scholars from the Asia Pacific and around the world to assess the impact of the global financial crisis on relations between countries and peoples. Keynote addresses were delivered by Nobel laureate for economics Kenneth Arrow and President of the American Political Science Association Peter Katzenstein. Prof Garrett participated in the stream of the Beijing Forum on International Impacts and Responses along with political scientists and economists from Britain, China, Japan, Korea, Russia and the United States.

Former Prime Ministers Bob Hawke and John Howard visited the US Studies Centre on 24 September 2009 to participate in the Centre's inaugural Council of Advisors meeting. They were joined at the meeting by Council Co-Chair Mark Johnson who is also Chairman of Macquarie Infrastructure Group, CEO of Citigroup Australia Stephen Roberts, University of Sydney Vice Chancellor Michael Spence, former Australian parliamentarian Michael Baume, Chairman of the US Studies Centre Malcolm Binks and Centre CEO Geoffrey Garrett. US Studies Centre lecturer, Harry Melkonian, has written a paper exploring the reportage defence in the UK, the EU and the USA in terms of doctrinal law with some recourse to free speech theory and concludes that reportage, whether viewed as an extension of the fair report doctrine or as a corollary to responsible journalism, serves an important, if limited, role in freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Margaret Levi interviews and workshops

On Friday, 16 October, Margaret Levi did a video interview with Elinor Ostrom, the co-winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Economics. The interview, which will appear online once edited, complements the prefatory essay Ostrom wrote for the forthcoming volume of the Annual Review of Political Science.
Levi will also deliver a number of lectures in coming weeks: "Provoking Preferences by Inducing Beliefs: Transport Sector Unions in the US and Australia" at the University of Texas, Austin (19 October), University of Virginia (22-23 October) and Columbia University (28 October). These talks are from a book-in-progress, co-authored with John Ahlquist.
On 14-16 October, Levi chaired the review of the Workshop in Political Theory and Policy Analysis, Indiana University, which Elinor and Vincent Ostrom co-founded.
Levi, with Audrey Sacks and Tom Tyler, has also published "Conceptualizing Legitimacy, Measuring Legitimating Beliefs" in American Behavioral Scientist (53: 354-375).

The Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) has released After the GFC: Australia and the Chimerica challenge, a strategy report written by US Studies Centre CEO, Geoffrey Garrett. The report provides an indepth Australian perspective on the global financial crisis (GFC) and its consequences. Garrett writes that the responses of China and the US during the GFC recovery will have global ramifications, but in few places are the stakes higher than in Australia. Read more
