Postdoctoral Fellows

 

The US Studies Centre invites applications for its 2010-2011 class of Postdoctoral Fellows. For information on how to apply please visit the positions vacant page. Applications close 27 February 2010.

The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney postdoctoral program brings to the Centre emerging academic leaders for a year of research and writing about the US. The six 2009 - 2010 winners, whose fields span the social sciences and humanities, were selected from an international field of 176 applicants:

  • Jason Casellas, Assistant Professor of Government at the University of Texas, Austin; PhD Princeton University. Topic: Latinos and education policy
  • Willie Gin, PhD in Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Topic: Nativism, multiculturalism and citizenship in Anglo-American countries
  • Sabino Kornich, PhD in Sociology at the University of Washington. Topic: Inequality and consumerism in contemporary America
  • Rebecca Sheehan, PhD in University of Southern California: Topic: Sexual liberation and evangelical awakening in the 1970s
  • Mark Geiger, Post Doctoral Fellow in Economic History at the University of California, Los Angeles; PhD University of Missouri, Columbia. Topic: A history of the Chicago Board of Trade
  • Jeremy Pressman, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Connecticut; PhD MIT. Topic: The US and Arab-Israeli-Relations

The US Studies Centre post doctoral fellowships are valued at more than AUD$100,000 each. The winners will take up their fellowships at the Centre from September 1, 2009. Fellows complete a major research project as well as engage with students and scholars in Sydney and around Australia during the fellowship period.

The fellowship program is directed by Professor Margaret Levi, Chair in US Politics at the US Studies Centre and former President of the American Political Science Association.

US Studies Centre chief executive Professor Geoffrey Garrett said the fellows would not only bring cutting edge research to the Centre but also contribute significantly to the vitality of US studies in Australia.

"The quality of our first class of postdoctoral fellows is testament to the Centre's international standing. The work the fellows do while in Australia will enhance our understanding of the US and help build lasting ties with academics destined for long and distinguished careers."
