Dr Willie Gin

Postdoctoral Fellow

Willie Gin received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was also a fellow in the Democracy, Citizenship, and Constitutionalism Program. He is primarily interested in advancing the comparative study of the relationship between diversity (both racial and religious) and political development, and believes in particular that closer comparison of Australia and the United States can be especially revealing. His dissertation examines variations in the political incorporation of Roman Catholics in the United States, Australia, and Canada in the 20th century to show how political coalitions and international structure help explain transformations in majority-minority relations. His project at the US Studies Centre will continue to look comparatively at the effect of diversity in the three countries, including differences in multiculturalism policy, civic integration of immigrants, social welfare spending, and mobilization of conservative Christians. He has studied previously at Harvard and the New School for Social Research.
