Professor William Parton

Professor, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State University

Bill was a speaker at the Soil Carbon Sequestration Summit co-hosted by the US Studies Centre and the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sydney in February 2011.

Bill has been an ecosystem ecologist for more than 30 years. He has focused his research on the development of ecosystem models and the study of biogeochemical processes. He is one of the primary authors of the widely used CENTURY and DAYCENT plant-soil ecosystems models which simulate plant production, soil organic matter dynamics, nutrient cycling, and trace gas fluxes at both regional and global scales.

Bill has considerable experience with modelling and experimental studies that evaluate the impact of land use change, fire, grazing, atmospheric CO2 levels, as well as climate change on grasslands, savanna, and agroecosystems. He has been a Senior Research Scientist and Professor at Colorado State University for the last 34 years. He has also been a member of numerous national and international scientific committees and has published extensively in the ecological modelling, soil science, trace gas flux and biogeochemistry research arenas.
