Professor Shane White

Professor of American History, University of Sydney


Shane White is Professor of American History, and an Australian Professorial Fellow, at the University of Sydney. He is the author of Somewhat More Independent: The End of Slavery in New York City, 1770-1810 (1991), and Stories of Freedom in Black New York (2002). He is the co-author of Stylin': African American Expressive Culture from its Beginnings to the Zoot Suit (1998), and The Sounds of Slavery (2005)

Shane White is currently at work, in collaboration with Stephen Garton, Stephen Robertson and Graham White, on a book entitled When Black Kings and Queens Ruled in Harlem.
