Dr Sean Gallagher is Chief Operating Officer of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney where he is a Research Associate in American Higher Education. He has previously held roles in science, government, public affairs, and state and federal politics.

Gallagher has worked on international initiatives in Australia and overseas – from research and education, to study abroad and internship programs, to think tanks and industry engagement – at the US Studies Centre, Perth USAsia Centre, the Australian Synchrotron, and Sport Knowledge Australia.

Gallagher completed his BSc (Hons) and PhD in chemistry at the University of Sydney for which he was awarded the RACI Cornforth medal, and has published articles in the world's leading chemistry journals. He has been a visiting researcher at the University of Southern California (chemistry) and a Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University (higher education).

A regular commentator on innovations in American universities in Australian media, Gallagher’s latest report focuses on the technology-enabled revolution in universities. He is co-author of a 2012 report on multi-national universities titled “The internationalization of higher education in Australia and the United States”.
