Professor Rattan Lal

Director of the School of Environment and Natural Resources, Ohio State University


Rattan was a speaker at the Soil Carbon Sequestration Summit co-hosted by the US Studies Centre and the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sydney in February 2011.

Rattan is Director of the School of Environment and Natural Resources at Ohio State University. His extensive experience in a wide range of soil science and related fields spans five decades involving professional positions In North America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

Rattan's research interests include soil processes and greenhouse effects, soil wetness and anaerobiosis, sustainable management of soil and water resources, restoration and rehabilitation of degraded soils, conservation tillage, agroforestry, tropical agriculture, natural resources management with emphasis on food security and environmental quality, and agricultural development in the Third World. His published work includes numerous books and journal articles.

We caught up with Rattan Lal during his visit to the US Studies Centre.
