General Peter Cosgrove AC MC

Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University and former Chief of the Australian Defence Force


General Peter Cosgrove was a speaker at the US Studies Centre National Summit in June 2011.

General Cosgrove served in the Australian Army from 1965 and was Chief of the Australian Defence Force from 2002 until his retirement in 2005. He previously headed the 9000-strong multinational INTERFET force sent to restore order in East Timor, for which he was appointed a Companion of the Military Division of the Order of Australia. He was Chairman of Operation Recovery Task Force after Cyclone Larry devastated Far North Queensland.

General Cosgrove was also awarded the Military Cross for his service in Vietnam, and in 2001, was named Australian of the Year. He was inaugurated as Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University in late 2010. He serves on the board of Qantas and is Chairman of The General Sir John Monash Foundation.
