
Michael L'Estrange AO
Director of the National Security College at the Australian National University and former Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Michael L'Estrange has been Director of the National Security College at the Australian National University since 2009 following four years as Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. He was appointed by Prime Minister John Howard as Secretary to Cabinet and Head of the Cabinet Policy Unit in 1996. He served in that capacity until 2000 when he became Australia's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
A Harkness Fellow, L'Estrange spent two years studying at the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and at the Institute of International Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He was also awarded the Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University.
