Professor Alex McBratney

Alex was a speaker at the Soil Carbon Sequestration Summit co-hosted by the US Studies Centre and the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Sydney in February 2011.

Alex is Professor of Soil Science and Pro-Dean in the Faculty of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources at the University of Sydney. He also directs the Australian Centre for Precision Agriculture. Alex's main research interests are in pedometrics and precision agriculture supported by the Australian Research Council, the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Horticulture Australia Limited, state instrumentalities in New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania, and private industry.

Alex's pedometric research is now largely focused on digital soil mapping and he is chair of the scientific committee of a consortium to produce a digital soil map of the world (www.globalsoilmap.net) which is supported by the Gates Foundation.

Alex is joint Editor-in-Chief of the global soil science journal, Geoderma and he co-edits Kluwer's Progress in Soil Science book series. He has authored more than 170 refereed international journal publications with an H index of 36. Alex is the Deputy Secretary General of the International Union of Soil Sciences.
