War on Terror Fatigue: US and Australian attitudes 10 years after 9/11

Many Americans and Australians think the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have not been worth the cost and are not helping to win the war on terrorism, according to new research by the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. Almost a decade after the September 11 attacks, the US Studies Centre has conducted a major survey of Australian and American attitudes towards security and the war on terror. Read More

2011 National Summit: The 9/11 Decade

Positioned between the death of Osama bin Laden and the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attacks, the 2011 National Summit of the United States Studies Centre will cast a forensic eye on the 9/11 Decade.

Government decision-makers thought leaders, academic experts and prominent journalists from Australia and around the world will examine the decade’s upheavals at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel on June 6-7. Read more

United States media fellowship awarded to ABC journalist

11 April 2011

The United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney has awarded its inaugural media fellowship, in partnership with the World Press Institute, to ABC journalist Siobhan Heanue.

Heanue was selected from a strong field of early career Australian journalists to travel to the United States in August this year, where she will join nine other international World Press Fellows for two months of immersion in US politics, business, culture and media. Read more

Geoffrey Garrett appointed as new Dean of University of Sydney Business School

Current CEO of the US Studies Centre Professor Geoffrey Garrett has been appointed as the next Dean of the University of Sydney Business School. He will take up the Deanship on 1 April 2012 following the completion of his term as CEO of the US Studies Centre.

"Professor Garrett is a scholar of international renown and I am delighted he has accepted this position as the University of Sydney Business School enters a crucial stage in its development," said the University's Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence. Read More

US Studies Centre appoints top diplomat to Board

The US Studies Centre is pleased to announce the appointment of Dennis Richardson AO, Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), to its Board of Directors. Announcing the appointment, US Studies Centre Board Chairman Malcolm Binks AO said Mr Richardson would bring invaluable expertise in Australia-US relations to the Centre. Read More

US alliance research project welcomed

The US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney has welcomed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's support for a major research project to be led by the Centre into the Australia - United States Alliance. Australia must lead global move towards soil security

Top international soil scientists have called on Australian governments and industry to lead the world in collaborating with farmers to increase soil carbon for improved soil security. The call was made as part of at the recent global soil carbon summit held at the University of Sydney, with the support of the United States Studies Centre's Dow Sustainability Program and the university's Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. Leading minds to discuss pathways to increasing soil carbon

The potential for global agriculture to become a positive net-contributor in reducing carbon emissions will be a key focus of a landmark summit being held in Sydney next week. As part of its Dow Sustainability Program, The United States Studies Centre in collaboration with the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources at the University of Sydney will host leading soil and plant scientists from the USA, Canada, Europe, UK and Australasia as they discuss one of the great challenges facing the world: the restoration of carbon depleted soils in order to ensure future food production and mitigate climate change.
