Professor William Chafe surveys the current polarization in Washington D.C. and what this means for the US economy and politics over the next 12 months as the 2012 presidential election looms. Chafe says the Republicans are intent on furthering their interests by sabotaging the economy while Barack Obama tries to provide a clear choice for the American electorate come next November. Professor Chafe is a Professor of History at Duke University and is in Australia as a visitor of the US Studies Centre.
