US President Barack Obama has called for a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines amongst a raft of sweeping gun control proposals. But as associate professor Brendon O'Connor notes, getting the laws through a reluctant Republican controlled House of Representatives will require a concerted lobbying campaign.
