Student from US Studies Centre acknowledged in Congress

25 February 2010

Erin Riley, Masters student with the US Studies Centre has been recognised in the congressional record as "an outstanding student-ambassador" during her Uni-Capitol Washington Internship Program (UCWIP). The UCWIP gives students from eight universities from Australia opportunity to intern for eight weeks in a range of congressional offices in Washington, D.C. The Honourable Sam Farr of California anounced in the House of Representatives on 22 February that the UCWIP was "a wonderful educational experience" and encouraged his colleagues to support the program.

US Studies Centre Masters students Jaime Serpanchy and Jonathan Bradley are also currently in Washington D.C. with the program. Erin and Jonathan are both currently blogging for the Centre about their experiences.

Street level bureaucrats are the teachers, police officers, social workers and other professionals who interact directly with citizens on behalf of the state. Professor Michael Lipsky’s pioneering work Street Level Bureaucracy: Dilemmas of the Individual in Public Service brought the significance of these workers in the public policy-making process to the attention of governments around the world. As an updated edition of his book is due for release in May on the thirtieth anniversary of its original publication, Michael Lipsky discusses why his findings continue to have currency. Michael Lipsky is Senior Program Director at Demos, a public policy research and advocacy organization based in New York. Watch Online
