Chinese Vice-President and heir apparent to President Hu Jintao, Xi Jinping, visited the US this week in a trip that combined the pomp and circumstance of an official visit with high level talks about some of the issues that unite and divide the two countries. With the 40th anniversary of President Richard Nixon's groundbreaking visit to China occurring next week, Research Associate at the US Studies Centre Tom Switzer talks about how this visit fits into the history of the alliance between the two nations.
