US forces may end Afghanistan combat role by 2013
2 February 2012
ABC Radio Connect Asia
The United States is hoping to end its combat mission in Afghanistan next year - a year ahead of the previously announced deadline of late 2014. The revelation was made to journalists travelling with the US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta who's on his way to Brussels for a meeting of NATO and its allies including Australia. He says the early exit of combat forces is at this stage "a hope" and that "nothing is final" until NATO leaders meet in May.
Tom Switzer discusses the domestic and international implications of this decision as well as the on-going Republican primaries. Listen here.
