The 2009 National Summit critically examined the impact of the first global recession since World War II on long-standing issues concerning globalisation, including global governance, labour standards and corporate social responsibility as well as climate change and energy security. The Summit assessed in particular the role and the response of the US.
National Summit Highlights
- Keynote speakers included The Hon. Peter Garrett MP, Minister for the Environment, John Mickelthwait, Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, Ross Garnaut, Climate Change Review, and The Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, Leader of the Opposition.
- Fifty distinguished experts from the US, Australia and the Asia-Pacific region engaged in discussion and analysis moderated by leading Australian journalists.
- Sydney and New Orleans: The role of local government in adapting to climate change, a public forum with Ray Nagin, Mayor of New Orleans, Clover Moore MP, Lord Mayor of Sydney, Professors Tim Flannery and Ed Blakely, drawing more than 1000 participants.
- 200 Summit delegates with key figures from government, business, media, academia and the community sectors.
- 36 national student scholarship awardees who participated in the Summit and a masterclass.
