Former Prime Minister John Howard was the guest of honour at a United States Studies Centre dinner hosted by Chairman of the Macquarie Group David Clarke in early September, 2008. The dinner was attended by members of the Centre's Board of Directors, Vice Chancellor Dr Michael Spence and other leaders from the University of Sydney, senior executives from the business community, as well as prominent politicians, military leaders and public servants who worked with Mr Howard during his tenure as Prime Minister for more than a decade.

The US Studies Centre Council of Advisors met to discuss the Centre's strategic plan. Prior to the meeting, the members of the Council met the Centre's inaugral cohort of postdoctoral fellows who will be working on US-related research projects for the next year.

Newly appointed US Ambassador to Australia Jeffrey Bleich met students from the University of Sydney at the US Studies Centre for a roundtable discussion. A group of 25 undergraduate and postgraduate students had the unique opportunity to discuss with Ambassador Bleich the Australia-United States relationship.
Sustainable supply chains

Harvard University’s Michael Hiscox and MIT’s Richard Locke, global leaders in research and business engagement in sustainable supply chains, introduced the state of the art in global best practice to participants of a Sustainable Supply Chains executive roundtable. The event was hosted by the US Studies Centre and the Institute of Sustainable Solutions at the University of Sydney.
Launch of the Dow Sustainability Program

A new three-year sustainability research program at the US Studies Centre was launched with US$2 million funding from the US-based Dow Chemical Company Foundation. Chief Executive Officer of Dow, Andrew Liveris, spoke at the launch.
