John Howard Dinner

9 September 2008

Former Prime Minister John Howard was the guest of honour at a United States Studies Centre dinner hosted by Chairman of the Macquarie Group David Clarke in early September, 2008. The dinner was attended by members of the Centre's Board of Directors, Vice Chancellor Dr Michael Spence and other leaders from the University of Sydney, senior executives from the business community, as well as prominent politicians, military leaders and public servants who worked with Mr Howard during his tenure as Prime Minister for more than a decade.

'US in the World' High School Lecture

17 October 2008

The US Studies Centre invited Year 10 & 11 students from across Sydney to a lecture and discussion with Professor Geoff Garrett. In focus was the role of the United States amid the challenges posed by globalisation, the rise of Islamic extremism, nuclear proliferation and the emergence of China and India as world powers. The US presidential election was also examined. Through interactive technology and use of the Socratic method, students were invited to share their ideas about the US.

The panel of David Brady (Stanford University), Michael Parks (former editor of the Los Angeles Times) and Geoffrey Garrett (US Studies Centre) examined what the vote reveals about American society, the priorities and challenges for President Obama, and the implications for Australia and the world.

The Great American Recession: What Does It Mean For You?

Ed Leamer, one of America's leading economic forecasters, provided expert analysis and predictions on the global economic crisis at a public lecture at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in March 2009. Leamer is Director of UCLA's Anderson Forecast and was the first to predict the 2001 US recession and to warn of the seriousness of America's growing housing bubble in 2005.

Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and CEO of News Corporation, discussed a range of global issues ranging from the global economic crisis to US-China relations and the future of the media with a group of Australian leaders from politics, business, academia and the media at a luncheon on 3 November in Sydney co-hosted by the US Studies Centre and Goldman Sachs JB Were.

James Hansen: What Australia should do about climate change

In a Sydney leadership luncheon presentation jointly hosted by the US Studies Centre and Malleson Stephen Jaques, Dr James E. Hansen, Director of the NASA Goddard Institute of Space Studies in New York, delivered a strong argument for moving to nuclear power.

Dr Hansen is regarded as one of the world’s leading climate scientists. He is credited with first raising awareness of the issue of global warming in the United States and he has been a strong proponent of the need for concerted international action.

One of America’s leading political scientists, Cornell University's Peter Katzenstein, is particularly interested in the relevance of cultural categories for the analysis of world politics. In his lecture for Sydney Ideas he offers a critique of the Samuel Huntington’s Clash of Civilization theory that conflict between distinct groups based on religion and cultural identities (eg Western, Islamic, Sinic) is inevitable, and will dominate in the post cold–war period.

City of the Future

The future of cities in the United States and Australia was explored in a landmark urban-planning conference in Brisbane's Parliament House on 15-16 November 2010, co-hosted by the US Studies Centre and the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland.

Senior Obama Administration officials US Assistant Secretary of Transport, Polly Trottenberg, and US Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Raphael Bostic, joined US business leaders including Dow Chemical Executive Vice President, David Kepler, and the President of Growth Initiatives for Alcoa, Kevin Kramer, and Australian experts to discuss public policy and private sector solutions to the urban challenges facing both countries.

John Howard: Reflections on the Australia-United States Alliance

Former Prime Minister John Howard reflected on his decade of experience in leading Australia's most important international relationship to a packed crowd at Sydney's Customs House. In conversation with Australia's preeminent print journalist Paul Kelly, Howard discussed topics from APEC and Kyoto to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and how the Howard government's close relationship with the United States had a significant impact on both countries and the world. The former Prime Minister's thoughts on the Australia-US alliance provided a unique window into the highest levels of the multi-faceted relationship between the two countries.

Bob Hawke: Reflections on the Australia-United States Alliance

Former Prime Minister Bob Hawke AC worked with two Republican Presidents Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush on critical global issues as diverse as the bombing of the US Embassy in Beiruit, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the creation of APEC, the end of apartheid in South Africa and bringing China into the global community. Australia's longest serving Labor Prime Minister is a loyal friend as well as a friendly critic of the US. His close relationship with Secretary of State George Shultz was a key element in shaping the trajectory post-Cold War Asia Pacific. At this event Hawke discussed his vast experience with, and views on, the US with Australia's leading political journalist Paul Kelly.

Thomas Nides is Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, serving as Chief Operating Officer of the Department and as alter ego to Secretary Clinton. Appointed by President Obama, he was confirmed by the Senate on December 22, 2010 and sworn in on January 3, 2011. Thomas Nides participated in the Roundtable event with Professor Geoffrey Garrett.
