2011 United States Studies Debates

23 August 2011

Debating Teams from Sydney Boys, North Sydney Girls, Penrith Selective High School debate at the United States Studies Centre. Geoffrey Garrett, Brendon O'Connor, Amelia Trial and David Smith adjudicate. Other schools locking horns during the debating competition included Cranbrook School, Pymble Ladies College, Sydney Boys High School, James Ruse Agricultural High School, Reddam House and St. Scholastica's College.

Washington DC Internship Program

The US Studies Centre and the Business School welcome home event was a cocktail reception celebrating the success of the Washington DC Internship program. Honored guests Malcom and Lucy Turnbull attended the event. Professor Geoffrey Garrett was among the many at this joyous event.

Intelligence reform in the United States

11 August 2010

Amy Zegart is Associate Professor at UCLA's School of Public Affairs, a Fellow at the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations, and a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in US national security policy, US intelligence, global studies, and public policy. In 2003 she was awarded Public Policy Professor of the Year for excellence in teaching.

In August 2010 she visited the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney to deliver lectures on intelligence reform in the US.

Jonathan Greenblatt delivers lecture to undergraduate students

Social entreprenuer and founder of All for Good, Jonathan Greenblatt, spoke about government, business and social responsibility in the US to a class of undergraduate students at the University of Sydney. The students are learning about the political environment in which business operates, and the relationship between government and business.

US Ambassador meets students at the US Studies Centre

Newly appointed US Ambassador to Australia Jeffrey Bleich met students from the University of Sydney at the US Studies Centre for a roundtable discussion. A group of 25 undergraduate and postgraduate students had the unique opportunity to discuss with Ambassador Bleich the Australia-United States relationship.

Jim Johnson seminar with US Studies students

Jim Johnson is the former Chairman of Fannie Mae and the person asked to advise Barack Obama on the selection of his vice presidential running mate. He engaged with students of the US Studies Centre and the University of Sydney at a luncheon.

'US in the World' High School Lecture

17 October 2008

The US Studies Centre invited Year 10 & 11 students from across Sydney to a lecture and discussion with Professor Geoff Garrett. In focus was the role of the United States amid the challenges posed by globalisation, the rise of Islamic extremism, nuclear proliferation and the emergence of China and India as world powers. The US presidential election was also examined. Through interactive technology and use of the Socratic method, students were invited to share their ideas about the US.

Visit by the Australian Political Exchange Council’s 25th US Delegation

24 September 2008

On Wednesday 24 September the United States Studies Centre hosted an afternoon tea for The Australian Political Exchange Council's 25th US Delegation. Three Democrat and three Republican State Legislators met with both staff and students from the University of Sydney to discuss Australia's Higher Education System as well as Australia's views on the state of American politics.
