The US Studies Centre held a cocktail reception to celebrate the launch of American Review, a journal of analysis and commentary on United States politics, business and society. The reception was held at the recently refurbished offices of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.

Meeting of the US Studies Centre Council of Advisors

The US Studies Centre Council of Advisors met to discuss the Centre's strategic plan. Prior to the meeting, the members of the Council met the Centre's inaugral cohort of postdoctoral fellows who will be working on US-related research projects for the next year.

Inauguration Watch: Breakfast

21 January 2009

More than 100 guests were invited for breakfast at Sydney's MLC Centre to watch Barack Obama's inauguration speech. The event was co-sponsored by the US Studies Centre, American Australian Association and the Consulate General of the United States, Sydney. Following the screening of the Presidential Oath and Inaugural Speech, the CEO of the US Studies Centre, Professor Geoffrey Garrett, provided analysis of Obama's speech.

Mike Chinoy: Global Crisis Points - The War on Terror, Loose Nukes and American Foreign Policy

Distinguished American journalist and commentator Mike Chinoy spoke about "Global Crisis Points" at a United States Studies Centre event. Mike Chinoy was formerly CNN's Senior Asia Correspondent and has over thirty years of international journalism experience, mainly in Asia. He came to international prominence for his live reporting from Tiananmen Square in 1989. He is a frequent commentator on Asian affairs and has recently published a book about North Korea: "Meltdown: The Inside Story of the North Korean Nuclear Crisis".

John Howard Dinner

Former Prime Minister John Howard was the guest of honour at a United States Studies Centre dinner hosted by Chairman of the Macquarie Group David Clarke in early September, 2008. The dinner was attended by members of the Centre's Board of Directors, Vice Chancellor Dr Michael Spence and other leaders from the University of Sydney, senior executives from the business community, as well as prominent politicians, military leaders and public servants who worked with Mr Howard during his tenure as Prime Minister for more than a decade.
