- Listen to this lecture:
Postgraduate study in the United States is an attractive proposition for many Australian students - but how do you get from "here" to "there"? In this information session, Professor Simon Jackman from Stanford University and US Studies Centre, provided answers to the most frequently asked questions about graduate study in the United States. These include:
- Why go to the US for graduate study?
- How does an American PhD differ from an Australian PhD in the social sciences?
- What coursework or research options exist?
- How long will it take to complete the PhD in the USA?
- How much does it cost and who will pay?
- What goes into a successful application?
- How can I get my application noticed (and accepted)?
- When should I apply?
- What does the timetable look like?
Professor Simon Jackman is Australian, receiving his BA at the University of Queensland before going to the USA for his PhD studies. Since then he has held faculty positions at the University of Chicago and Stanford University. He has over 12 years experience on PhD admission committees.
